Thank you to PetFlow

This is Sarah from MMCR and I want to give huge, enormous THANK YOU to PetFlow for sharing the wonderful story of our very special 60 kittens. I didn’t mean to make you cry, but our whole reason for making the video was to show you what we do almost every day. Sadly, the case of the 60 kittens is not uncommon. But because of the dedication of our volunteers and the generous, compassionate folks out there who help provide the needed resources, we can often make miracles happen. Because you posted our video, we have heard from people from all over the United States. This is amazing, wonderful and we are so truly grateful!

Last month we took in 65 cats from animal control that were going to be euthanized within 24 hours, 70 cats that were living in single wide trailer, and 10 kittens that required eye surgeries (in some cases, eye removal) from another animal control. This is what we do, and it’s all made possible because of compassionate volunteers and donors!

Thank you so much for helping us share our story (http://blog.petflow.com/60-kittens-were-going-to-be-euthanized-then-this-woman-did-something-that-moved-me-to-tears/). There are so many fabulous stories to share. Stay tuned for our next video “Saved by the Grace of God.”

50 Cats on our Doorstep!

Last Sunday turned out to be anything but a typical day for Sarah, our director.  Preparations were underway for Sarah and a group of MMCR volunteers to go to Calhoun County Animal Shelter, and provide assistance with their facility, after it had been determined that the shelter was overcrowded and conditions there did not meet Michigan’s standards for proper care. The cats at the shelter were sick; badly in need of treatment.  Mindy, the vet tech at the shelter, had been working with Sarah for days concerning this situation.  Meanwhile, the director of the shelter was becoming increasingly concerned about an inspection from the state agency that monitors such things. Unfortunately and suddenly, on Sunday morning, the shelter director started euthanizing cats.  She was indiscriminate: starting in one room and killing all of the cats in that room – including many adoptable kittens.

Trying to save as many cats as she could, Mindy quickly loaded all of the cats from the shelter’s colony room into her van.  When she arrived in Sarah’s driveway, with 50 adult cats in her van, Sarah knew that if MMCR did not take these cats in, they would go back to the shelter and be killed.  Everyone quickly discussed what resources would be required to save these guys. There was no time to assess this situation.  The cats would die! What would you do?

50 cats! On top of those from the neglect case that MMCR is currently working on (the 80 cats in a trailer in Clinton County) and another 20 cats that we had agreed to take from Roscommon Animal Control, we are in desperate need of help! Both our main foster house in Grand Ledge and Sarah’s house in Albion are full to the very brim with cats and kittens and most are sick!  This is why we need your help.

PLEASE – if you can commit to volunteering with us or donating any extra cash, PLEASE chip in now!Any help you can provide over the next 4 to 6 weeks would be a huge benefit to the well being of these cats! Every donation of time or money makes a huge difference.

Can you help these cats? Our core volunteers are exhausted, but if we can get on top of the situation right now—with your help— we will be back to normal (or as normal as we ever get!!!)  THANK YOU!!

MMCR Saves 30 More Cats

Recently, MMCR was informed about a mother and her two sons who were keeping about 80 cats in a standard-size trailer at a trailer park near Bath, MI. The trailer park rules only allow an owner to have two pets on the premises. Since the owner was afraid of having the cats confiscated and ultimately euthanized, the family kept all the cats indoors at all times. A month ago, another area shelter took in some of the easiest-to-adopt kittens. Since then, on October 3rd, MMCR took in three litters of kittens, including a litter of three, a litter of four and a pregnant female who has since given birth to a litter of three.

On October 10, we rescued another 16 cats from the same location: 10 males and 6 females, one of which is pregnant. After she gives birth, MMCR will have four new litters of kittens to find homes for. Then, on October 17, MMCR picked up 8 more adult females it will need to spay. With MMCR’s help, Clinton County Animal Control was able to send a message to other rescues in mid-Michigan, but has had little response from anyone about taking any cats. Unfortunately, there is a time limit for moving all the cats out of their overcrowded conditions in the trailer and because of the lack of response, Clinton County will be seizing another twenty-five males from the premises.

While the owner of the trailer and her sons tried to care for the cats as best they could, they simply didn’t have the funds to feed the cats and also pay for spaying and neutering them. As so often happens in such cases, two original cats became dozens. The cats are remarkably healthy and in good shape, but need socializing and regular medical care. They are mostly Maine Coon mixes and exotic breeds. These cats are used to living in a colony situation and should be able to integrate into MMCR’s population readily.

Mid-Michigan Cat Rescue is a non-profit, no-kill organization that will attend to the medical needs of these cats as well as to their socialization. It is dependent upon community assistance to fulfill its mission to give this kind of care for all the cats it takes in. Funds are required for spay and neuter procedures as well as any other medical assistance. MMCR also needs the help of volunteers to provide for its cats.
